Dr. Smiddy is originally from East Tennessee where he grew up in a family of bluegrass musicians. He got an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Virginia and then went to medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. Multiple factors influenced him to pursue a career in medicine. When he was about 20 he sought medical care and was told by the doctor that he needed to "go to church" because he identified as gay. At the same time many of his friends and peers were sick and dying from HIV. He decided to specialize in LGBTQ medicine before such a specialty existed. He has spent the past 30 years dedicated to serving this community and others. Outside of medicine he enjoys travel, art, collecting, theater, and spending time with his rescued Maltese "Snowy".... who is a fixture in the office as well.
